  • Grieving the Death of A Loved One
    Memory Care Alliance

    Support and Action 6-Week Program

    This group program is for those who have experienced recent deaths of family, friends, or colleagues. It is free-of-charge and is facilitated by Eileen Joyce, Certified Coach and Grief Recovery Specialist with 25 years of experience. The group is sponsored by the Memory Care Alliance and is free of charge to participants.

    The purpose of this program is to learn and share in a confidential setting. Each week we will discuss grief and loss and how they affect daily life and relationships.

    Meetings over the six weeks will cover:

    • Losses and how we deal with them
    • The myths about grief, loss, and healing
    • How unresolved grief affects our capacity for happiness
    • Creating resilience even in times of greatest challenges

    The team at the NM Aging & Long-Term Services Department has shared the following resources with us.

    Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC)

    The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) is one “hub” that can navigate people in the right direction.

    Veteran-Directed Care Program

    Veteran-Directed Care gives Veterans of all ages the opportunity to receive the Home and Community Services they need in a consumer-directed way. The flyer provides more details and contact information.

    New Mexicare

    New MexiCare provides financial assistance and training to caregivers who are assisting friends or family members with daily activities due to physical or cognitive limitations. The goal of the program is to allow older adults to thrive in their homes and communities as an alternative to nursing home placements and to help reduce emergency department visits.

What’s New in Parkinson’s Research?

Dr. Peter Schmidt, President and Chief Scientific Officer, at Rho

Dr. Peter Schmidt is President and Chief Scientific Officer, at Rho, a contract research organization that designs and manages the complex process of bringing a drug from its design stage in the laboratory to FDA approval.  Dr. Schmidt joined Rho in 2022 to oversee the NIH portfolio and help build the Parkinson’s disease program and has been promoted to President after success in those domains.  Prior to joining Rho, Dr. Schmidt was the vice dean at the top 50-ranked medical school at East Carolina University, the second medical school in the UNC system, and I’ve had academic appointments in biochemistry, public health, and he is currently an adjunct professor of Neurology at NYU.  In addition to leading trials internationally, Dr. Schmidt has been a member of national and international committees and panels focused on neurology research and clinical care, for the Department of Defense, DARPA, Medicare, and for a program to improve Parkinson’s care in Europe.  For ten years, Dr. Schmidt was Chief Research Officer for the Parkinson’s Foundation.  He has led both bench and clinical research in movement disorders including the first work to establish enhanced Parkinson’s risk in people infected with COVID-19.  Trained as an applied mathematician at Harvard and Cornell, Dr. Schmidt has received approximately $65 million in grant funding from NIH, PCORI, and private foundations.
